Day 2 at Roland Garros 2025 brought high-stakes drama and early upsets, as top contenders battled through tough matches and rising stars made bold statements on the clay.
Day 2 of the French Open marked the start of the campaign for many title contenders. Overshadowed by a major upset, the majority of favorites managed to overcome the first hurdle of the tournament.
Nevertheless, the most remarkable result came from German Daniel Altmaier. The 26-year-old, who previously made some noise at Roland Garros by beating Jannik Sinner in an epic 5-hour, 26-minute battle in 2023, took out world number 4 Taylor Fritz. The German displayed an excellent level throughout all four sets, while Fritz seemed to struggle physically, stating, “My movement on court is really bad. I don’t know what’s going on.”
Especially anticipated were the first matches of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who both won in straight sets. Alcaraz took out Zeppieri 6:3, 6:4, 6:2, while Sinner beat Arthur Rinderknech 6:4, 6:3, 7:5, only facing resistance from the hometown hero in the final set.
Other seeded players like Casper Ruud, Denis Shapovalov, and Frenchman Arthur Fils also managed to start their clay-court campaigns on the right foot, showing no doubt in their game. While most seeds have already entered the tournament, title favorites Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev are set to play on Tuesday, the 27th of May.
