As the dust settles on a thrilling first week at Roland Garros, the stakes rise and the competition tightens with the arrival of the Round of 16. The 2025 French Open has already delivered moments of brilliance, heartbreak, and unexpected triumphs—and now, only the elite remain.
The Round of 16 at the French Open began on Sunday with a matchup between American Tommy Paul and Australian Alexei Popyrin. As the No. 12 seed, Paul entered the match as the clear favorite and lived up to expectations, securing a straight-sets victory.
Another American who advanced to the quarterfinals was Frances Tiafoe. World No. 16 defeated Daniel Altmaier—who had made a surprise run to the Round of 16—by a score of 6–3, 6–4, 7–6.
Next up was Rome champion and tournament favorite Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard faced yet another American, Ben Shelton. What was expected to be an entertaining match lived up to the hype. Alcaraz edged out Shelton in a tight first set, winning the tiebreak, and followed up with a convincing 6–3 win in the second set. Although Shelton fought back to take the third set 6–4, Alcaraz responded in the fourth, closing out the match 6–4 to advance in four sets.
The final match of the day featured Lorenzo Musetti against Holger Rune. Musetti, who has shown excellent form in Paris and declared his intention to “win the title,” continued his strong run. He defeated the No. 10 seed Rune in four sets, 7–5, 3–6, 6–3, 6–2.
On Monday, the remaining Round of 16 matches will be completed before the tournament moves into the quarterfinal stage. Special attention will be on Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Alexander Zverev—all of whom are strong title contenders in Paris.
