After his straight-sets victory over Mackenzie McDonald, Djokovic reflected on his performance and the journey ahead:The Guardian+1The Australian+1
“I don’t want to get too much ahead of the present day, because I haven’t had really great form as a lead-up to Roland Garros.”
Coming fresh off his 100th tour-level title, Novak Djokovic started into the French Open. Seeming to have found his form at the right moment, the 24-time Grand Slam champion beat American Mackenzie McDonald in straight sets: 6:3, 6:3, 6:3. Another strong performance came from world No. 3 Alexander Zverev, who beat Learner Tien also in straight sets. Looking to claim his first Grand Slam title, Zverev struggled with his form recently and is trying to build momentum going into the next rounds.
Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev surprisingly lost to Cameron Norrie in a five-set thriller. Medvedev, who has not won a tournament in the last two years, came back from a 2-set deficit before falling 5:7 in set 5 despite a 5:3 lead in the final set. Another comeback came from Gael Monfils. The Frenchman, fueled by his home crowd, took on Bolivian Hugo Dellien. After dropping the first two sets, Monfils got a trademark victory: 4:6, 3:6, 6:1, 7:6, 6:1.
Other notable results were the victory of Jack Draper. The British world No. 5 beat Mattia Bellucci 3:6, 6:1, 6:4, 6:2, as well as the early exit of seed No. 10 Grigor Dimitrov, who had to retire despite a 2:1 lead in sets. What was meant to be a first-round clash between Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca and Hubert Hurkacz ended up being a show by the young Brazilian, taking the Geneva finalist Hurkacz out in 3 sets.
Looking ahead, the next matches of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner on Wednesday are still highly anticipated, as they seem to be in great shape, promising a great campaign for both of them
