Post-match, Tsitsipas candidly admitted:
“I think I was immature in my decision-making. I lost focus at crucial moments.”
He acknowledged the need for introspection and improvement:
“I need to use my experience more wisely and avoid impulsiveness in high-pressure situations.”
Day 4 and 5 of the French Open brought another round of excellent tennis at Roland Garros.
The biggest upset was the loss of former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, who lost to qualifier Matteo Gigante, 6:4, 5:7, 6:2, 6:4. Moreover, we saw Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner advancing another round—Alcaraz dropping only one set against Fábián Marozsán, while Jannik Sinner defeated Richard Gasquet in three clear sets. The loss marked the career end of hometown hero Richard Gasquet.
Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic, broadly viewed as some of the favorites for the title, both won convincingly, while two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud lost to Nuno Borges. Visibly injured, Ruud could not advance into the next round and, despite finishing the match, the Norwegian seemed to be close to retirement during the last two sets.
Andrey Rublev, the 17th seed, advanced to the next round with a confident straight-sets win over Australian qualifier Adam Walton. Rublev dominated from the baseline and never allowed Walton to find rhythm, closing out the match decisively. Rising Brazilian star João Fonseca also impressed, defeating French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert in straight sets. The 18-year-old showed remarkable composure and shot selection, continuing his breakout performance in Paris.
Jack Draper added another strong showing for the younger generation, overcoming Gaël Monfils in four sets. Draper’s powerful left-handed game proved too much for the French veteran, who received a heartfelt farewell from the home crowd. With Zverev, Djokovic, Sinner, and Alcaraz all in top form and moving smoothly through the early rounds, the stage is set for some blockbuster matchups as the second week approaches.
