After Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open in dramatic fashion, the tour is looking to leave the clay courts behind. With Wimbledon approaching quickly, players are preparing and practicing on the grass.
Looking back at the first couple days of grass court tennis, one story stands out. It is the one of the 17-year-old German youngster Justin Engel. Engel, who already won ATP matches on both hard and clay courts, got a wild card for the Boss Open in Stuttgart, where he played his first ever professional tournament on grass.
Taking on James Duckworth in the first round, Engel became the youngest player since Rafael Nadal in 2003 to win an ATP tour level match on all surfaces, defeating Duckworth 4:6 6:4 7:6. However, his story did not end here taking on in the round of 16 Engel, currently coached by former world number 16 Phillip Kohlschreiber, faced American Alex Michelsen. With an impressive performance Engel was able to stun world number 35 6:4 6:4 in front of his home crowd.
Once again Engel went on Centre Court on Wednesday afternoon, as he took on seed number 4 Felix Auger Aliassime. Fueled by confidence, after his first ever top 50 win, Engel displayed another determined performance, just falling short 6:7 in the first set. Going into the second set the level was still high however, the Canadian showed his experience and got the job done defeating Engel 7:6 6:3.
Nevertheless, Engel seems to be a promising talent with big goals. As he stated himself, that he wants to be “the third” next to Alcaraz and Sinner. As he is rising in the rankings Justin Engel is definitely one to be watched
